KAILUA-KONA — Hawaii Island police arrested 31 motorists for suspected drunken driving between April 30 and Sunday. Three of those drivers were involved in a traffic crash and one was younger than age 21.
Kona officers arrested the majority of those motorists with 21 followed by South Hilo officers with four and South Kohala officers with three. Officers in the Hamakua, North Kohala and Puna arrested one motorist in each district.
So far this year, there have been 405 DUI arrests compared with 418 during the same period last year, according to police.
Through Tuesday, there have been nine deaths on Big Island public roads compared with 10 fatalities at this time last year.
